A Body in Motion Stays in Motion: How to Keep Going When You're Tired

Ever walked in the door after a long workday, completely drained, knowing you should exercise but feeling the magnetic pull of the couch? That's exactly where today's conversation begins.

After losing 35 pounds over summer, I've learned that discipline trumps motivation every time. The secret? I never give myself the option to negotiate. Walk the dog, immediately change into gym clothes, and head straight to the nearby gym—because once I sit down, I become "like a cow to the barn... once I'm in, I'm in." This simple routine acknowledges a powerful truth: "A body in motion stays in motion, and a body at rest stays at rest."

What makes us choose discomfort when comfort is so readily available? It's recognizing the consequences of our choices. Skipping workouts affects how we feel in our clothes, our energy levels, our sleep quality, and our overall motivation. Complete wellness extends beyond just exercise—it's about proper nutrition, staying hydrated (water from sunup to sundown), and getting adequate rest to restore our bodies and minds.

The most compelling reason to maintain these habits? Tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Heart health requires ongoing commitment. Whether you're exercising at home like Kara and Susan, dancing like Dori, refereeing sports like Mike, or hitting the gym like Roger, finding what works for your life and sticking with it is the true wisdom of wellness.

What's your wellness routine? How do you stay motivated when exhaustion hits? Share your strategies and join our community of health-conscious listeners who understand that small, consistent choices create lasting change. Like, comment, subscribe, and let's elevate our wellness together!

Speaker 1:

Wow, chicka, wow, wow, what's up? Party people, thank you for tuning in to another episode of Elkivate your Life. I am your hostess, with the mostess L as in the letter L and key as in the key to your heart. So on this Wisdom Wellness Wednesday, we're going to touch on a few different topics. Ps. In my last episode I mentioned have you noticed how the weather and the atmosphere has just been different Hot, cold, eclipse, impacting all of our electronic devices, our personalities, our demeanor, all these interesting things right, and today I so as a part of Wisdom Wellness Wednesday. The reason I'm bringing this up is I couldn't help but notice that the weather has been extremely hot, which I've been talking about. I talked about in Monday's episode how the weather. You know we're having like this heat wave in September. What is up with that? And now?

Speaker 1:

So my routine, or what I normally do, is go to work with the kiddos at school. As most of you know, that are my loyal listeners. I am a special education aide, or special education pada for Fallon Middle School and I have to say I think I've said this before when you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. I've said this before. When you do what you love, you never work a day in your life and, while it doesn't exactly pay the bills, it's something I love doing. I never knew how much I loved it until I got in with the school and then I remembered oh yeah, it's well. It's kind of like being a mom on steroids, to be honest, but it challenges me in so many different ways and I just realized my love for the kids. It's just being like a mother to all of them. And now that we are going into this inclusion with the SPED kids, it's been interesting to see them in the classes and how they do grow, learn, behave, etc. Behave, et cetera.

Speaker 1:

So, going back to Wisdom Wellness Wednesday, my peers and I are talking about on the way out how we're so tired because this year has been a challenging year New kids, new challenges that we're faced with, not enough staff, yada, yada. And I'm telling one of my colleagues oh yes, believe me, I understand, I want to go home and take a nap, just like you, and I said so. What I do for myself is when I come home, after I walk my dog, I know I have to put my gym clothes on right then and there, because the minute I sit down, I'm like a cow to the barn. Once I'm in, I'm in. I don't want to go back out, even though the gym is just 20, 30, 40 steps from where I live. It's just stupid close, like there's no reason. But here's the thing I personally am not a gym rat. I'm not a fan of going to the gym. I prefer to exercise outside. I love doing like hiking or bicycling or roller skating, rollerblading, walking, yoga, so many other things, rather than going to the gym. In this new adventure of my life, this new era, I lost 35 pounds throughout the summer months and days like today.

Speaker 1:

Wisdom Wellness Wednesday. We're all like we're so tired, we're spent, we have to go to an hour meeting after work and all these things, and all of my peers and I are just like hey, have you noticed how tired we are? And we go home and we just want to collapse. We don't want to make dinner, we don't want to do chores, we don't want to do this, we don't want to do that. And I'm telling them yes, trust me, the struggle is real, I know it, I feel, I know it, I feel it, I live it. So what do I do differently than them is. I come home, I walk my dog and I know myself, I know if I don't put my gym clothes on and go to the gym, I'm not going to go. I'm not going to go exercise, especially with this weird weather that's happening. It's like super hot and we have to be out in and all day chasing around kids and not really chasing them, but sometimes chasing them, but anyway, I'm exaggerating kind of sort of not really.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, my point is it's Wisdom Wellness Wednesday. So where do you get your wisdom for your wellness on the days that you have to exercise and work out? So for me, I go every other day and there may be a day I miss here and there. And if it is, it's like okay, I got to go hard tomorrow, I have to intermittent fast, I have to get in more steps, I'm going to park further away, whatever I need to do to make up for that lost time, so to speak. Right, and I just realized today when she told me that I'm like, yeah, it sucks to have to come home and have discipline, but if I don't, what are the repercussions I will suffer? Well, I won't like how I look in the mirror. I won't like how I feel in my clothes. I will want to sleep more and do less activity and be lazy and not as motivated. And so I just started reminding myself oh yes, a body in motion stays in motion, and a body at rest stays at rest. And so that is kind of what is on my mind today and what I want to ask my listeners out there what is it you do for Wisdom Wellness Wednesdays? What are you doing for your physical health? Are you doing anything? Are you implementing any sort of exercise in your daily routine?

Speaker 1:

And I know there's a lot of people out there that will go oh, you know what I? You know I stand on my feet all day as a cashier, or you know, my job barely allows me to sit down. I get it. I'm one of those people. I go to a classroom and every time I want to go sit down, it's Ms Elke, ms Elke, ms Elke. I need help. Ms Elke, can I have a fidget? Ms Elke, there's no time for sitting down. The only time I can sit down during the day is when I go to use the restroom. I can sit down during the day is when I go to use the restroom. Okay, let's just keep it real. So I'm wondering what is it you do to keep your mind right, your body right, your heart healthy? Because, while you may be saying I'm too tired, I work too many hours, I'm older, whatever, whatever, excuses, excuses At the end of the day, we all have to think about not only do we have to ensure that we get enough rest and we have to ensure that we are feeding our bodies the proper nutrients, but we also have to think about what are we doing for our heart health.

Speaker 1:

And so I would like to ask my loyal listeners out there what do you do? So I would like to ask my loyal listeners out there what do you do? What is it you are doing to keep yourself healthy and well? Because tomorrow is not guaranteed, friends. We could, anything could happen. We could get hit by a drunk driver, we could be walking from our car to our office and fall, have a heart attack. Who knows? There's a million things that happen to people we know every day. One minute they're having a conversation. The next minute, aneurysm, stroke, heart attack, whatever. So I ask my question again what is it that you are doing for your Wisdom Wellness Wednesday? Or just for your wellness? Are you eating as healthy as you could be? Are you getting enough rest? Our body needs rest to restore our brain health, our heart, our bodies. We cannot function if we're not getting a proper night's sleep, and obviously nutrition plays a part in it. Right, we have to make sure we're getting enough protein, enough vegetables, enough carbohydrates to provide us energy, balanced meals. So I would love to hear from my listeners, because I do get feedback from my loyal listeners. Thank you very much, andrew, birthday boy, happy, almost birthday.

Speaker 1:

I've been talking about our Virgo birthday month and shout out to Andrew and yes, I'm just wondering. I know my girl, dory, gets her dance on and that's how she stays in shape. But she does exercises at home as well. Kara karalovemyartistetsycom, one of my loyal listeners and supporters, I know she will do the bike. She'll do like a stationary bike at home. She does weights. I know my girl, susan, she does exercise at home. So a lot of us you know what and shout out to the people that do that at home. That, to me, is even that is amazing and disciplined and motivating and inspirational, because when you can do your sit-ups, your push-ups, your whatever at home, when you are in the comfort of your home and you just want to sit and be lazy and watch TV or have a cocktail, or binge watch Netflix while eating some Oreos, whatever. All these things require discipline, and so I would love to hear what is your routine?

Speaker 1:

Jeff Parra, namaste, I know how you meditate, but what is it you do for your physical fitness? Is it swimming, walking? What is it? Mike Kaufman, in his case, I know that he'll say well, you know, I do a million steps when I'm reffing football, which I'm exaggerating with a million, but he does do a lot of steps. He gets the steps in when he's refereeing football. For all you sports lovers, I'm sure you can relate. You watch the games, you know how much they have to run up and down the field, et cetera.

Speaker 1:

Lisa Roberts Curbelo, working day and night how do you get your exercise in? What do you do? And Angie, angie, angie Ermer, with Thrive Lavelle, who promotes all of her all-natural supplements Not really an exerciser, although she's fit as a fiddle because of her supplements, but also she's been known to do walking, exercising, hiking, things like that. She, like me, isn't really a fan of working out, but because we want to keep our butts in shape, we're doing it. So I would love to hear from my loyal listeners.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 1:

Oh, speaking of what about you, danae? And it's as if you have found the fountain of youth and you're not telling us. Because how is it that you look the same from high school? You must have some really good genes, some really good eating habits, drinking a lot of water, I don't know. I will tell all of you that I drink water from sunup to sundown. That is my go-to. I stay hydrated. I do try to get in eight hours sleep. Sometimes it might be seven, seven and a half, but I know that sleep is important.

Speaker 1:

Very minor and yes, I would very much like to know how are we keeping ourselves mindful on Mondays and well, on Wisdom Wellness Wednesdays? Please share your thoughts. I would love to hear your routine. Oh, let me not forget. Kyle Few, I'm going to guess you work out at home. I don't know, I'm just taking a guess. Um, did I leave anyone out Roger? Roger works out at the gym. I see his posts. Go, roger, every time I see your posts, it helps me stay motivated to go back to the gym. And so, yes, thank you.

Speaker 1:

I would love to know what is your routine? What keeps you mentally and physically well, because they all go hand in hand. And we're not getting any younger, ladies and gents, unless you're one of my middle schoolers listening to this right now, my loyal listeners tend to be over the age of 40, 50. So I would love to know what is your regimen, what is your secret, what is your perfect solution and how do you stay motivated? How do you stay motivated and disciplined when you're hot, you're tired, you had a long day, you just want to kick your feet up and relax. What do you do?
