Earthquakes, Heatwaves, and California's 175th Birthday: A Candid Conversation
Earthquakes, heat waves, and an unexpected September summer - California is showing off its wild side this month! After a brief absence due to a power outage and an autoimmune flare-up, I'm back to share what's been shaking in our Golden State.
Have you felt those recent tremors? The 3.5 magnitude quake in Clayton today follows another one just last week. Meanwhile, this bizarre September heat wave couldn't have worse timing - striking during the workweek instead of weekends when we could actually enjoy it! And to make matters more interesting, weather experts warn of dry lightning storms on the horizon, raising fire danger concerns across the region.
Despite my oral lichen planus making it painful to talk (you'll hear me sipping throughout to soothe my sores), I couldn't miss sharing California's 175th birthday celebration with you! Did you know our state gave birth to Levi's 501 jeans in 1873, the electric guitar in 1931, and the revolutionary iPhone in 2007? These innovations alongside Disneyland, Hollywood's first electric theater, Barbie dolls, neoprene wetsuits, and skateboarding showcase why California remains at the forefront of creativity and technological advancement.
Between birthday shoutouts to my Virgo friends, recommendations for Creative Kara's amazing Etsy store, and my new septum piercing adventure, this episode weaves personal updates with mindfulness reflections. How do you practice gratitude daily? My friend Lulu and I share morning gratitude rituals, but whether through meditation or present-moment awareness with loved ones, mindfulness helps us navigate life's challenges. Remember that romance and chivalry aren't dead - they're vital elements in nurturing meaningful relationships through thoughtful gestures and genuine connection.

Oh, chicka-wow-wow, what's up? Party people, welcome to another episode of Elkivate your Life. I am your hostess, with the mostess L as in the letter L, and key as in the key to your heart and key as in the key to your heart. Well, it is Monday, september 15th. Let me start out by saying sorry you didn't hear from me on Wednesday. We had a power outage here so I could not do anything until the later hours and by that time it was like the podcast time frame had passed. So sorry you didn't hear from me.
Speaker 1:I do have a lot of stuff I want to share with everybody. One curious, if anybody has felt the recent earthquakes that have been hitting us. There was one in Clayton just after 3 pm today, clayton, california, magnitude of 3.5. And I want to say there was one like a week ago or so. Yeah, I can't remember if it was Saturday or Sunday, but anyway, I'm just wondering has anyone noticed the new earthquakes that have been taking place? Let's see what else.
Speaker 1:There's lots of stuff I did want to report about the news. For example, what's up with the heat wave happening in September? Apparently this is our late summer coming to us now. Not on the weekends, when I can be by my pool or head to the beach or work on my tan. Of course, it's got to be during the week, when I'm taking care of kids at the middle school, playing PE with them, sweating with them all that fun stuff. Anyway, yeah, it's crazy. They're saying that this is the end of the summer heat wave and it's going to be followed by a dry lightning storm. What's up with that? It's just crazy that the heat wave is hitting us now. In September, I tend to wear pretty revealing Halloween costumes, and so I usually like to have some sort of tan. So hopefully the tan that I'm working on this month can carry into next month. Let's see, let's see how it goes. But yeah, there's a heat wave that started today and it's going to go through the week day, and it's going to go through the week, except for, of course, the weekend. Then we might get some rain, just in time for me to go out to karaoke. And they're saying it's going to be followed by a chance of dry thunderstorms, which obviously are elevating concerns for fire danger weather experts are talking about.
Speaker 1:Yeah so, and the other reason that I haven't been able to do my podcast. Well, as you hear me sipping on my drink is because I've been having a very bad OLP breakout and for those of you that are just tuning in and don't normally listen, I'm referring to my autoimmune, my oral lichen planus. So sometimes the sores are in the back and this time they're in the front, so it's difficult to talk, it's just uncomfortable. Anyway, thanks for showing up, thanks for listening, thanks for tuning in, thank you to my loyal subscribers.
Speaker 1:Want to give a shout out to my birthday girl, kara. Happy belated birthday. Can't believe I forgot to wish you happy birthday yesterday. I pride myself on remembering my friend's birthday and I totally dropped the ball on that one. I'm so sorry. I hope by me talking about your amazing Etsy store will give you some positive juju and send you some referrals. I don't know, but I always talk to everyone. So shout out to my Virgo friends Jacques. My friend Jacques was yesterday, bonnie's was on Friday, yours was yesterday. I'm so sorry girl. Yeah, I really dropped the ball on that one, I apologize. So for those of you that do listen, I'm always talking about my girl, kara.
Speaker 1:Creative Kara. Lovemyartistetsycom montages with video and music, poetry, proposals, anniversary, you name it. She's got a video and a song and she puts together a beautiful montage of memories and she also has some very heartfelt poetry on her page, as well as clothing, shoes, boots, laptop bag that I've been stocking for years, along with matching boots Real leather, by the way Just various different things. Check out her page, see, I can't even talk right because of my mouth. Lovemyartistetsycom, and that's for Kara, and make sure you use hashtag Elkivate so she knows you heard of her through me and my podcast.
Speaker 1:Shout out to Lisa Roberts Curbelo. Still haven't bumped into you. Although I haven't been out very much lately, I'm long overdue for going out dancing, singing. When my mouth gets like this, I just become a crab in my shell. Very much cancer, the crab. I just hibernate. I don't want to go out. It hurts to talk, it hurts to drink. It's not that I can't have a good time, but I'm definitely hindered. So sorry I haven't seen you, lisa. Looking forward to seeing you for your birthday in November. Like I said, I hope I don't have to wait that long. Shout out to Mike Kaufman.
Speaker 1:Thank you for subscribing. Thank you for being a loyal subscriber. Jeff Potter, namaste, my friend, it was truly a treat to see you and your girl out on the town having fun, laughing and enjoying yourself at a comedy show. All of us could use more comedy in our life these days. Right, sorry, you're hearing me drink. It's the only thing that kind of helps me talking differently, speaking differently. Roger, shout out to my boy Roger, roger, sorry I missed you at your dancing weekend. Hope you had great fun, danced your booty off, had some great dance partners. Anywhere, we're always happy to join you anywhere, except for Main Street Brewery. Sorry, not sorry. Kyle Few, commitment to love. Love is a verb. Find it on Amazon Audible. Thank you for being a loyal listener and subscriber. Thank all of you for being loyal listeners and subscribers.
Speaker 1:So first of all, yes, want to wish all of my lovely Virgo peeps happy birthday. Hope it is the best year thus far. Um, I told you I was going to talk about some local events happening, so have any of you felt the earthquakes? By the way, obviously those of you that are not in California wouldn't experience them, but I'm just wondering those of you that are did you feel any of the earthquakes, the one that happened today and the one that was like a week ago? On a Saturday or Sunday it was in the morning hours, I can't remember if it was the Sunday I was getting ready to go to church, or the Saturday I was going with my girl. Anyway, also, happy 175th birthday California. So happy 175th birthday California.
Speaker 1:Apparently, we have gone down in history for some eight great inventions by the Golden State residents. California celebrates 175 years of statehood on its admission day this week. The Golden State became a state in September of 1850, and since then its residents have been inspired to greatness in many different ways. So throughout American history, california has been a state that is committed to realizing the American dream. And California has come together to learn from the challenges we face to create a stronger, more vibrant future. We are constantly innovating in tech, fashion and entertainment.
Speaker 1:And then the list goes on to list Disneyland opened in Anaheim 1955, hollywood's first electric theater in 1902, a venue open devoted to movies, projecting them on a silver screen. Number three electric guitars were invented in Los Angeles in 1931 by George Bouchamp and Adolf Rickenbacker. Ah, number four Levi's 501 Blues. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented their copper riveted denim pants in 1873. Hmm, known as waist overalls, these pants improved the choice of durable work clothing for gold rush prospectors, a style still appreciated to this day. Interesting, I did not know that fun fact.
Speaker 1:Five wetsuits save surfers from cold Pacific waters. A UC Berkeley physicist envisioned the material that would retain body heat while in cold ocean water, with the help of a Scripps Institution of Oceanography engineer. The neoprene wetsuit launched in the winter of 1950 and was later patented by surfer Jack O'Neill. Number six Barbie is Born. Mattel's Barbie doll was made and patented in El Segundo in 1959. 1959. The doll was conceived by Ruth Handler and was joined by her partner, ken, in 1961.
Speaker 1:Number seven skateboards gained traction as an international sport. The skateboard was invented in California in the 1940s and 50s, mass produced in 62 with clay wheels attached to wooden boards. Now totally different. Number eight apple reinvents communication, january 2007. Mobile communication skyrocketed to a whole new level with the birth of the iphone.
Speaker 1:Um, interesting, a lot of fun facts. I didn't know about California, okay, hmm. Oh my gosh. And did I miss the Emmys yesterday? Oh, my God, I did. The Emmys were on yesterday. Did anybody watch them? How did I miss all these important events? Man losing my touch.
Speaker 1:What did everybody do over the weekend? Anything exciting, because it was a nice weekend. As for me, I laid low, like I said, because of my mouth. Although the new addition to me is I got a septum piercing, something I had been wanting for a very long time and approximately a month ago I took the leap and did it. So thank you, orbit Skate, for piercing me and doing it ever so gently To those of you that don't know, they do every kind of piercing you can possibly think of and all of the staff. They're just wonderful and very gentle and uber talented and, yeah, I just love them there. Well, that's all I have for tonight, especially because Chanel decided to start giving herself a bath right next to me. So, thank you for tuning in. Thank you for listening. I wish I had more share with you.
Speaker 1:As far as Mindful Monday, in my case, I'm going to say if you're not good at remembering things, which I normally am, I'm going to say that my husband has rubbed off on me on this one, since I forgot a couple important things. Be sure to be mindful and put these things in your phone, create a list for yourself so that you remember. And how do you practice your mindfulness? Is it through waking up with gratitude every day and saying all the things you are grateful for? My friend Lulu and I practice this gratitude every morning, or perhaps it is meditating or just showing your gratitude to everyone you come in contact with that morning, that day, that evening. Whatever it is, I hope it is helping you to stay mindful.
Speaker 1:Put the phone away, be present with your partner, have meaningful conversations with your partner. Have meaningful conversations when you're watching a movie, hold hands and enjoy the time together and the art of romance, the art of chivalry. It is not dead, it is still very much alive. So, ladies and gents, do those thoughtful things that you do for your significant partner, your significant other, to make them feel special, whatever that may be. Buy her her favorite perfume that she's been hinting she wanted. Bring her home her favorite flowers, take her out to a romantic dinner. And, ladies, what can we do for our men? Hmm, let's see. Pack their lunch, get their breakfast ready, make them a lovely dinner, rub their feet, be kind to them, show your appreciation. Thanks for tuning in everyone and until next time. Ciao. For now.
